This report was developed within the Specialist Course and Master´s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of the Critically Ill Person of the Institute of Health Sciences-Porto of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Its main goal was to demonstrate the journey that led to the development of competences by the Specialist Nurse and within the scope of the Degree of Master’s in nursing. It focused on the traineeship done on the Final Internship and Report on the Emergency Department (ED), and in the optional clinical context of the Commission of Infection Control (CIC), during the period of 11/02/2020 to02/27/2021. It was also analysed the competences acquired in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), during the first year´s internship. The used methodology was descriptive, analytic, and critical-reflective.I n the ICU context the focus was on the deepening of different knowledges. A literature review on the “Using of 8,4% Sodium Bicarbonate for filling Haemodialysis catheters” was carried out, and two lectures were done concerning “Stress/Teamwork/Communication” and “Prevention Measures- Enterobateriacea-New Delhi Metalo-betalactamase”.On the development of common competences it was explained: the ethical pillars, focusing on the respect for human dignity, on autonomy and believes, and on values of the person/family; the quality of care, with emphasis on the development of a critical attitude to structure the intervention plans; the management of care, focusing on the development of supervision and coordination of given services and care; the professional investigation and learning, having been carried out two reviews of literature, one on “Conflict Management” with a complimentary lecture and poster left to the ED, and another one on “The use of Helmet CPAP in the ventilation of COVID-19 patients”. Regarding specific competences, the ones developed on the ED were addressed, like outlining priorities and stimulate strategies of intervention in situations of urgency and/or emergency. On the internship in the CIC the focus was epidemiologic surveillance, audits, and quality improvement. Improvement opportunities were identified which resulted in a review of literature regarding “High Level Disinfection or Sterilization in Endoscopes Reprocessment”, and in two posters, one on Video cystoscope Reprocessment and another regarding the “Registration Procedure of Antigen Rapid Tests”. Despite the difficulties concerning SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the last strengthened the acknowledgement of the importance of Specialist Nurses for the care of the Critically Ill Person. It was possible to develop and consolidate assertiveness, autonomy, efficacy, and communication. It was clearly enlightened the importance of the Specialist Nurse to be the holder of competences of advanced Nursing, as means to provide quality and specialized health care.
