Abstract

The present clinical report intends to describe the learning process that I experienced in the last year as a student of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa 15º master’s in nursing Specialization in Medical-Surgical with major in critical care patients, particularly focusing on the competencies acquired and developed during the Curricular Unit of Final Clinical Practice and Report. In brief overview the report is divided in three sections: introduction, development and conclusion. The introduction contextualizes the clinical practice, describing the objectives and the methodology utilized. Following this, the development encompasses four chapters. The first presents and analyses the period referent to the Curricular Unit of Vigilance and Clinical Decision that occurred on the second semester of the first year, located in the Emergency Department of a Northern Portugal Hospital. The second, pretends to the Curricular unit of Final Clinical Practice and Report and encompasses two moments: the first in a Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit of a major Northen Hospital, and the second in a Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at the same hospital. The third chapter describes and reflects all the different activities that were developed during the clinical practice and relates them with the objectives that were previously defined based in the specific competences of the Medical-Surgical Nurse Specialist role with major in critical care patients. This was a reflexive analysis using fundaments of evidence-based practice in order to contribute to the achievement of my master’s degree in nursing. In each clinical context the essays were intended to describe the different competencies acquired and were produced based on the best scientific evidence. The fourth and final chapter presents a literature review that emerged from a concern in the clinical practice. In this chapter, are presented both the background of this literature review and the conclusions achieved. The conclusion presents a critical analysis that reflects the different aspects mentioned in the development, highlighting the contributes to the improvement of clinical practice and the contribution to the acquisition of competencies during the learning process. The methodology used was essentially descriptive and reflexive in order to allow the description of both thought and decision-making processes that I developed as a future specialized Nurse during the last curricular year.
