Abstract

This research identifies the perceptions and expectations that the regular teachers have inwhat concerns the profile and the work developed by the Special Education Teachers.We conducted a bibliographic review involving the theme of Inclusive Education,perceptions and expectations of teachers and the role they play in the education of childrenin general and children with special needs in particular.In terms of methodology, we used the technique of the questionnaire; the latter was appliedto regular teachers of the 2nd and 3rd Cycle of Junior School and Secondary School, in thecouncil of Ponte de Sor.We defined the independent variables (age, sex, teaching experience and academicqualifications) and the dependent variables (perceptions regarding the profile and the workof Special Education Teacher, and expectations regarding the profile and the workdeveloped by the Special Education Teacher).Contrarily to common sense in what concerns the perceptions and expectations of regulareducation teachers regarding the profile and work of the Special Education teacher, wefound that the teachers surveyed have high expectations and representations in relation tothe work and profile of these professionals.We found out that the male inquired considered perceptions a priority taking into accountthe profile and work to be developed by Special Education teachers, while the femaleinquired value expectations more relatively to the profile and work of the Special Educationteacher.We also verified that as the age, professional experience and academic qualifications of theinquired increase, the perceptions and expectations about the profile and work of theSpecial Education teacher decrease.
