Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of regenerative endodontics is the restoration of normal pulpal function in infected and necrotic teeth. In this regard, the focus is on the restoration of protective functions such as innate pulpal immunity, pulpal sensitivity, and pulpal repair through mineralization. Biodentine® (Septodont Inc., Saint Maur des Fossés, Île-de-France, France) is a hydraulic cement based on calcium silicate (Ca₃SiO₅), which emerged after MTA. It is a potentially useful material in pulpal revascularization procedures due to its consistency, low cytotoxicity, and ease of manipulation. The main objective of the present systematic review was to understand the impact of the use of Biodentine® on pulpal regeneration and revascularization, according to scientific evidence.
Materials and Methods: The present systematic review was based on the PRISMA guidelines. Thus, the bibliographic search was conducted on the PubMed® and ScienceDirect® platforms, with the aim of answering the research question, taking into account the defined objective and criteria. Results: After excluding duplicate studies and analyzing the titles and abstracts, 42 articles were selected. Following a full-text review, 5 articles were chosen for detailed analysis. The biocompatibility of Biodentine® was evaluated, showing good clinical outcomes when used in cases of pulp regeneration and revascularization. Biodentine® was used in a case of pulp auto-transplantation and in combination with a blood clot. The results of both techniques were positive, with no symptoms reported and pulp regeneration observed. Conclusion: Biodentine® has proven to be a bioceramic cement of quite interesting use in cases of pulp regeneration and revascularization. It presented characteristics very similar to MTA, standing out for overcoming certain disadvantages present in this biomaterial. Thus, Biodentine® did not cause discoloration in the dental crown when used and showed better consistency.
