With the emergence of the internet and the constant increase in its use and users, in greater numbers among the adolescent population, it is possible that relationships between parents and children have changed. In this sense, the present investigation aims to analyze the relationship between the perception of problematic internet use and attachment to parents. A non-random convenience sample of 307 adolescents (52.1% female) aged between 12 and 18 years old (M=14.25, SD=1.71) was used. A protocol was administered that included the following instruments: Sociodemographic questionnaire, Scale of Generalized Problematic Internet Use 2 and the Inventory of relative and peer attachment (IPPA), both validated for the Portuguese population. The results demonstrated that adolescents who make greater problematic use of the internet, reveal less Communication and Affective Closeness, Acceptance and Understanding in their connection with their parents, therefore revealing a greater distance from them. Other relationships were found with sociodemographic variables such as: socioeconomic level, sex and age of adolescents. These results contribute to research in this area, which is scarce, helping to reflect on the implications that problematic use of the internet can have on the quality of adolescents' relationships, in this case, with their parents.
