Abstract

The literature recognizes the need for further in-depth studies in the fields of Work and Organizational Psychology and Vocational and Career Development Psychology. Thus, this study seeks to identify profiles of individuals in terms of valences, job satisfaction and gender, exploring whether different profiles are associated with greater/lesser turnover intentions. A cross-sectional quantitative design and a nonprobabilistic approach were used. A total of 315 workers from the public and private sectors, working in Portugal or abroad, participated in this study. Data were collected online, through a protocol consisting of four instruments: a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Work Valences Scale, the Brief Index of Affective Job Satisfaction and the Turnover Intention Scale. Descriptive analyses, statistical association tests and cluster analysis were performed. Some statistically significant and negative correlations were found between job satisfaction and turnover intentions and between positive job valences and turnover intentions; statistically significant and positive correlations were also found between positive job valences and job satisfaction. Furthermore, the results allowed us to differentiate two profiles of individuals in terms of job valences and job satisfaction, with each of the clusters being distinguished according to their characteristics. This paper will also present its practical implications, and the limitations pointed out in the study.
