The objective of this study was to evaluate various stages of assembly and setting of a semi-adjustable articulator and facebow to choose the best techniques in a nine pa-tient population. In facebow assembly were both evaluated sitting and lying position of the patient, and the better occlusal recording material used in the bite fork, between vi-nylpolysiloxane and impression compound. In articulator setting were both evaluated the influence of the initial position assembly, CR or MIP, as the best type of record for pro-gramming the condylar guide, side excursions records or protrusion records. There were also compared the condylar guide values and Bennett angle obtained with the initial set-ting values of the articulator (30º for condylar guidance and 15º for Bennett angle) in order to validate or rule out no individual setting of the articulator. The facebow was assembled twice per patient, with different patient positions in the chair, sitting and lying, and with two different materials in the occlusal fork, impres-sion compound and vinylpolysiloxane, whose handling was timed. The mandibular model of each patient was also mounted twice, once with and MIP registration and other with CR register. The condylar guide was settled with lateral interocclusal records and protru-sion interocclusal records both. It was concluded that the sitting position of the patient was the most convenient to the Dentist, and the impression materials used in the fork have both advantages and disadvantages, although the vinylpolysiloxane handling time has been much lower (216,2 seconds against 291,8 seconds for impression compound). There was no significant dif-ference in the use of protrusion records instead of side excursions to programming the condylar guidance (mean difference 3,33º). The initial position of the assembly signifi-cantly affects programming of the condylar guide but not the Bennett angle. The compar-ison of the values of condylar guidance and Bennett angle in the population (n = 9) with the fixed condylar and Bennett angles at 30º and 15º, respectively, showed not be accepta-ble for not being representative values of the studied population.
