Abstract

As part of the Thesis curricular component of the Master's program in Food Engineering at the School of Biotechnology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, the option of carrying out a curricular internship was chosen. The selected host institution was the Quality of Materials and Finished Product (QMFP) department at Symington Family Estates, Vinhos, S.A. (SFE). During the internship, the role of Quality Control Assistant was performed at Quinta de Santo António, Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto. This report aims to describe the activities undertaken over the five-month internship period, from February 2024 to July 2024. This time allowed for a practical understanding of the manufacturing environment and the refinement of knowledge acquired throughout the academic journey. Additionally, it contributed to the development of technical skills in areas such as packaging material control, bottling and finishing process control, as well as a significant improvement in soft skills, including communication, time management, and problem-solving. The internship report comprises an introduction to the host company and the QMFP department, as well as a detailed description of the tasks performed. These tasks included material reception and bottling process control, carried out daily in line with the company’s activities. Additionally, validations of artificial intelligence equipment integrated into production lines were conducted, specifically for an empty bottle defect inspector, a filling level inspector, and a cork wine capillary progression inspector. Lastly, conclusions and reflections on the work developed and future proposals were presented. In summary, this was an extremely enriching experience that provided direct contact with the job market, fostering growth in various aspects, both professionally and personally.
