Violência e funcionalidade familiar nos adultos mais velhos

Abstract

According to the Worl Health Organization, violence against the elder is any act or absence thereof, with or without intent that causes harm and suffering. The present study aims to analyze violence and familiar functionality towards older adults within the scope of the curricular unit of Advanced Reserch Methodologies II of the Psychology of Education degree, at the Catolic University of Braga. Throughout the investigation no statistically significant data was found between violence and the other abalyzed variables. Even so, the male gender obtained higher rates of violence, such as in the participants who attended only the first year of school. Having age in consideration, older adults up to seventy years old had the highest mean values, with the lowest averages belonging to the group over eighty years old. Elder abuse is an issue that must be addresses as they are often overlooked. It is believed that training all the professionals and psychoeducation near the families of those individuals and with themselves are essential future practices.
