Dating violence is a highly prevalent phenomenon in the portuguese population, whose relevance of investigations in the field of psychology has increased. The main objective of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between dating violence, self-esteem, body image and psychological (mal)adjustment. To achieve this goal, quantitative research of correlational and transversal nature was conducted, consisting in a sample of 100 university students who are in a dating relationship or who have been in a relationship in the last year. To assess the dating violent, we applied the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) and to evaluate the self-esteem we administered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The Appearance Scheme Inventory (ASI-R) was administered to evaluate body image and finally we used the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) to assess the psychological (mal)adjustment. A sociodemographic questionnaire was also administered. The results demonstrated that dating violence is related to body image, self-esteem, and psychological maladjustment. Furthermore, it varies depending on age and gender. It is related to the experience of suffering violence in the past. Body image also varies according to gender and self-esteem is related to the father’s education. The results revealed that the experience of violence is related to self esteem, body image and psychological maladjustment. This investigation allowed to contribute to the literature by deepening the understanding of the psychological impacts of dating violence and identifying crucial areas for future investigations.
