The theoretical revision was completed and based on an empirical study that took in three institutions located in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, which receive elderly people. We developed a quantitative and qualitative study that allowed us to perceive the importance of affects for the elderly. These people not only have necessity of affects, but also need to express freely their affects. After the survey and the interviews, we found that affection for the elements respondents that deal with elderly people affection means, friendship, companionship, support and compassion; for the elderly respondents who participated in our study affectivity is related to friendship, companionship and believe that the kindness should exist at all ages. In the institution where they are, the responsible elements do not prohibit them to express their affection.
