Background: In Mozambique it is estimated that 40 % of young people between 20-24 years old, had children before age 18. These pregnancies may bring out negative consequences, namely: high school dropout rates, poverty and health problems. Excessive consumption of alcohol during pregnancy has been associated to adverse effects encompassed in the term Disorder of Fetal Alcoholic Spectrum. Little is known about the relationship between different patterns of alcohol consumption and psychological experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. Objective: Know the psychological experiences and the alcohol consumption of pregnant adolescents in the Maputo City. Methodology: 134 pregnant teenagers aged up to 19 years participated in this study. The AUDIT was administered to explore the consumption and the EAGM was applied to explore the psychological experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. Results: Seventy percent (70 %) of our sample consumes alcohol during pregnancy. Negative correlations marginally significant between the consumption of alcohol and the subscales “the imagined son” and “pregnancy as change factor” were found. We detected significant differences between the psychological experiences of pregnant consuming alcohol and those who do not consume regarding the subscale “difficult aspects of pregnancy / maternity”. Conclusion: It is necessary to give more special attention to the issue of teenage pregnancy and alcohol consumption. Our results indicate the need to continue the study in this area in order to enable a better understanding.
