Abstract

This report has the purpose of describing the path to acquire and develop competences as a Paediatric Nurse, and is based on the main topic concerning the experience of children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report is based on a critical and reflexive analysis of the defined objectives and activities, focusing on providing families with care and the health promotion on children and adolescents, leading to healthy behaviour, basing my clinical practices on the Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed daily life routines worldwide, with children and adolescents equally affected by the consequences from the lockdowns imposed by health politics that have affected life globally. Families had to adapt their dynamics, and nurses had to adjust their own methods to ensure continued improvement of healthcare practices. The internship has been divided into three modules, covering different settings of assistance to newborn, children and adolescents: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit and Paediatric Ward. The diverse internship areas allowed me the opportunity to develop skills to provide care to paediatrics patient in a complex scenario, assessing family needs and adjusting my intervention and communication to their development stage, in order to raise their wellbeing and health. The proposed objectives and activities helped me develop my thought process and knowledge transmission capabilities, and via decision making and clinical practices supported by scientific evidence, I acquired and developed competences as a Paediatric nurse, to respond to the needs of children, adolescents and families.
