This report serves to showcase the work process in the creation of two digital instruments for professional and educational use in music production, made inside of Native Instruments’ sampler, Kontakt. The creation of these instruments – the woodland pianos – went through three distinct moments: the selection of which instruments to sample; recording sessions whose purpose was the detailed capture of various individual sonic elements of two pianos; the editing of said sonic material and subsequent implementation in Kontakt, as well as the creation of a visual user interface for each of the instruments. The professional field of music composition is ever entwining itself with audio engineering and production. The creation of digital instruments through sampling is, then, an indispensable resource which combines the aestheticoriented musical detail of one field and the technical rigor and abilities of the other, and it is through this creation that one can achieve sonic and musical results that wouldn’t otherwise be attainable without sampling, as I will illustrate throughout this report.
