Abstract

This study analyzes the content of videos uploaded on YouTube about eating disorders, aiming to understand the way it contributes to the health literacy of the viewers, as well as the quality of the health information of the videos. It also explores how the authorship of a video relates to its quality, and if the quality has effects on the video's popularity.
To understand these questions, a mixed investigation methodology was developed to analyze, in a first instance, the content of 30 videos about eating disorders on the YouTube platform, in order to analyze the content through criteria to measure the quality and trustworthiness, to understand the value of this digital platform for health literacy. On a second instance, the content of the four best qualified videos was also studied through a categorical analysis.
The results of this analysis allowed the conclusion that there is potential for YouTube to be a quality tool for promoting health information, however, most of the analyzed videos revealed a low quality of information, so there are still improvements to be made before we can consider this social medium a good ally for health literacy
