Developmental science documents the importance of childhood as a crucial stage of human development. Consequently, the endorsement of evidence based public policies to foster promotion and protection of child’s rights and healthy development are, increasingly, a global concern.
This leads to look for the well-being of parents and families, and challenges stakeholders to provide various forms of support within the community to foster their involvement, mental health and resilience, which are related to safe and nurturing ecologies for child development.
For those children and youth who encounter more adversities and are in need of alternative care, societies face the challenge of being able to provide repairing environments, also in view of child wellbeing and development.
This paper will reflect on the current opportunities and challenges of child welfare system in Portugal, such as the strengthening of responses for family support in the community, the pursuit of high quality and trauma sensitive residential care, the transition to a model of family foster care, the definition of a competence profile for all professionals working with children in alternative care. This may serve as a starting point to cross-cultural reflections around global and aims and cultural specificities to the full protection of children.
