Description

Artificial intelligence, journalism and climate change: Communication in the Global North is a post-doctoral project implemented in light of the funding programme CEEC Institutional 2021, from the FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, by Lungile Tshuma, Auxiliar Researcher at CECC.

New technological advancements are playing a significant role on how
businesses conduct their practices. Many industries, including the media, have
been appropriating some technological tools and including them on their production
chains. This has led to new journalistic practices, which are based on the use
of AI tools in processes of news gathering, production and dissemination. However,
how such tools are integrated in daily routines can differ significantly from
one media to another, as well as the purpose of such use. This study seeks to
expand the way we think about AI in newsrooms, focusing specifically on the
topic of climate change communication – one which ranks poorly on journalistic
editorial priorities when compared with other hard news stories, such as those
related to politics, even though climate change is one of the greatest modern
challenges in the world. This interdisciplinary study will include various
practices employed in Portugal.
