Description
The use of antimicrobial textiles with the capacity to induce specific changes in the skin’s microbial communities has emerged as a promising strategy to treat, alleviate the symptoms, and control skin dysbiosis. Incorporating natural antimicrobial agents has gained considerable attention in medical and healthcare textiles due to properties such as being skin and environment-friendly, safe, and non-toxic compared to synthetic antimicrobial agents. Between them, extracts of by-products from agri-food sectors are recognized as low-cost sources of bioactive compounds with a wide range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and regenerative.
In this perspective, DETEX aims to explore different strategies and technologies for incorporating by-product extracts in different textile materials with antimicrobial potential. It is hypothesized that by-products-based antimicrobial textiles can deliver bioactive compounds in dysbiotic skin and could modulate the skin microbiota while stimulating skin regeneration.
