Adaptation and validation of the Toronto Symptom Assessment System for Wounds (TSAS-W) to Portuguese

Resumo

Caring patients with wounds necessitates recognizing the diverse symptoms, their experience, which can significantly impact their quality of life. (1) Backround: To enhance symptom 16 management and promote patient comfort, a systematic assessment is essential for better control of 17 these symptoms, including pain, odor, and exudate. Toronto Symptom Assessment System for 18 Wounds, is a tool that assesses the complexity and specificity of wounds whose goal is not healing, 19 but effective control of symptoms, aiming at patient comfort. The aim is the adaptation and validation of the tool for the Portuguese population and to analyze the feasibility. (2) Methods: Methodlogical study of cross-cultural adaptation of a quantitative, cross-sectional, observational and descriptive nature. Data collection took place in two Oncology Hospital Institutions and in an Integrated Continuing Care Network, in a sample of 90 patients with 94 chronic wounds. (3) Results: 24 No changes to the original format were observed, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.827 in the 25 1st evaluation and 0.867 in the 2nd evaluation, which confirmed the internal consistency. Surveyed 26 observers confirmed the feasibility in the clinical setting. (4) Conclusion: This validation came to fill 27 the lack of recording instruments for non-healing wounds, aiming to optimizing patient care.
