Resumo
The period after the death of Gregory VII in 1085 was extremely difficult for the Roman church, not only because of the struggle against the Emperor Henry IV and the (anti)pope Clement III,but also because of the divisions among the Reformers themselves. These problems clearly emerged during the short reign of Desiderius of Montecassino /Victor III (1086-1087). The aim of this article is to recreate some of the ecclesiological elements of this papacy through the analysis of its three surviving documents together with other sources, particularly the Chronica Monasterii Casinensis. However, the lack of documents about this pope, should be compensated through interpretation and historical reasoning. Therefore, this work will represent a first attempt to recreate his ecclesiology, bearing in mind that we will only be able to grasp fragments at the most.
