Vernacular bibles and inquisitorial censorship in 16th-century Portugal

Resumo

In contrast to the European context, the first complete translation of the Bible into Portuguese is relatively late, dating back to the 17th century. The small num- ber of translations is not, however, indicative of a lack of interest in the biblical text. By analysing data from 16th-century inquisitorial proceedings, I argue that this situation partially stemmed from Inquisitorial control, which vehemently opposed the reading and circulation of vernacular Bibles in Portugal.
