N2 - The purpose of this article is to provide an update on a study that began in 2017 regarding the use of blockchain technology on audiovisual distribution platforms. The research included a case study involving fourteen decentralized blockchain platforms, seven of which are currently operational: White Rabbit, Ethereum Movie Venture, DECENT, Flixxo, Hubii Network, Singular DTV, and LBRY. We aim to provide up-to-date information about the advantages and disadvantages of using decentralized blockchain platforms in audiovisual distribution by reporting the results of our analysis of the existing computer science and audiovisual studies literature (concerning the use of new technologies in audiovisual works) together with the findings of an observational study of the platforms mentioned. The article also explores the concepts of smart contracts and nonfungible tokens and highlights the main legal differences compared with the traditional mode of distribution in terms of the efficiency and complexity of the processes. The latest research examined European Union countries’ legal practices, codes, acts, directives, and conventions, which need to be updated as a safeguard against the digital exploitation of works and in regard to other questions on which the current content is seen as inadequate for the present age. This article discusses ways in which blockchain technology, albeit flawed, can contribute to a more adequate approach to the legal protection and utilization of audiovisual works during the digital era.
