Resumo
The aim of this paper is to study the language contained in the papal Portuguese and Italian sources of the first half of the 12th century. The article focuses on the papal documents concerning frontier conflicts between the bishop of Oporto Hugh (1112-1136) and those of Coimbra and Braga. By both the study of Roman documents as well as the comparison of the diocese of Oporto with the bishopric of Cremona (Northern Italy), we will analyse three main points. First, the Portuguese ecclesiastical context of the first decades of the 12th century. Second, the transformation of the papal language and the communication between the Popes and the European bishops. Third, the necessity to study the case of Bishop Hugh of Oporto on a European scale.
