Resumo

This article deals with the history of 'SOS Azulejo Project' created by the Judicial Police Museum in 2007 with diversified and innovative partnerships, reacting, but also acting proactively against an extremely negative scenario of destruction of the Portuguese tile heritage. Carrying out a series of pragmatic and awareness-raising actions for the safeguarding and enhancement of this unique and identity carrying cultural heritage, the project obtained extremely positive results, such as the decrease in registered thefts of Portuguese historical and artistic tiles by more than 87%, or the stopping of demolitions of tiled facades and removal of tiles from the same facades at a national level, through the proposal of new specific legislation approved in Parliament in 2017. The ‘SOS Azulejo’ was awarded the European Union's Grand Prix for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra in 2013 and considered by the same organization an example of good practice in 2018.
