Resumo
This article analyses how the Portuguese newspaper Publico and Expresso have viewed the recent phenomenon of Portuguese emigration to Brazil. Relying on such methods as critical discourse analysis and framing analysis, it highlights social representations of Brazil and Portuguese emigrants to this country. Then, it demonstrates how some of these contemporary representations dialogue with some of those forged in the 19th c., at the peak of Portuguese emigration to their former South American colony, which gained independence in 1822. Finally, the article elucidates how a certain interpretation of Portuguese identity has been mobilised to characterise these new emigrants.
