The ambiguity of masks as transformative conveyors of meaning: protection, disguise, and interactive performance

Resumo

Face masks convey meaningful messages according to their formats and modes of use. Advertising and cinema are the chosen background for the approach to the chapter argument that addresses the ambiguity of masks serving both as protection and as concealing devices along human interactive contexts. This chapter will include a semiotic analysis of some chosen movie frames compared with some advertising frames in which masks and mask use have been similarly taken into account by film producers to expand scary meanings and motivate corresponding reactions from young audiences.
