Resumo

This chapter will look at the European football competition model through the lens of de facto utility of open competition system with promotion and relegation that represent its core. For this purpose, UEFA’s club competition format will be set out before examining the negative effects of various UEFA rules on competitive balance between teams, including UEFA’s ranking and seeding system. The individual and cumulative effect of these rules is to distort the equality of opportunities, entrench the market power of elite clubs, and make the access to the European contest market by small- and medium-sized clubs excessively difficult. This is followed by the theme of breakaway leagues that inevitably emerges from the described European competition ecosystem, and analysis of the pending European Super League case. The chapter ends with suggestions on reforms needed to restore competitive balance and bring stability to the model, with emphasis on representation and revenue distribution.
