Resumo

Within the context of an ongoing reconstruction after the World War II, and sixteen years after its end, the Portuguese colonial war in Africa begins, only ending in 1974. Following the freshness brought by the open windows of II Vatican Council (1962-1965), the Pacem in Terris by John XXIII (1963) as well as the “Populorum Progressio” by Paul VI (1967), the bishop of Porto, Mgr António Ferreira Gomes, once returned from his forced exile, writes his Homilies of Peace, which he delivers every 1st of January, between 1970 and 1982. Tis brief essay is a reading of those homilies which coincide with the last years of the Portuguese war in Africa (1970-1974), in which there are some key elements for the development a political theology of peace.
