Theology and technology: beyond utopia and hybris

Resumo

Starting from the interpretation of technology as an environment or system in which humans currently live, and which is therefore never neutral, two seemingly opposing readings of how it can be framed, either anthropologically or theologically, are explored: the optimistic and even eschatological reading of Gabriel Vahanian (1927–2012); the sceptical and even critical interpretation of Jacques Ellul (1912–1994). Based on an analytical comparison of the two positions, a moderate theological approach is proposed, which explores the importance and, at the same time, the problems of technology, especially in its recent developments such as AI.
