The schools of the XXI century have so many different students and in so many different areas: while some are eager to learn, others have no will at all. Regarding one of the major concerns of the researcher, as a teacher of high school, our research has to do with different levels of commitment to school, or in other words, we try to understand why some students have a strong bond to school, while other students are so uninterested.The methodology we used consisted on making a study of “quality nature”, this is, a descriptive study case which expresses the students’ opinions. The researcher tried to understand the students’ perceptions about their experiences at school; not only about school in general, but also about curricular practices in the classroom, about the process of evaluation, the pedagogical relationship with their teachers and the relationship with other educational partners. To collect this data, it was used the focus group technique, among sixteen students from the 6th and 7th year, of a state school, downtown Porto. The analysis of this information allowed the researcher to come to the conclusion that the (un)tying of students towards school, at this age, is strongly influenced by two factors: on one hand, the sense given to school work, on the other hand, the spectations, towards the future, in familiar context.This way, we can observe that, tendentially, students belonging to less involved families, as far as schools are concerned, whose spectations of their parents (or the responsible for their education) in what concerns their educational success, are lower, are the ones who demonstrate a greater uninterest towards school. At the same time, the importance of the pedagogical liaison and the sense of school work are reinforced as vehicules that can help build that link.
